How to Make, Delete, and Understand

Click Here for a Printable Version of this Document

First, understand What is a Shortcut

A shortcut is an icon on your desktop that is a "pointer" to a program installed somewhere on your computer.  If you remove the shortcut, you DO NOT remove the program.

You can tell what's a shortcut because of the little arrow on the bottom left part of the icon (see image on the right)

To Make Shortcuts

Shortcuts of a Program:

  • Click Start, (All) Programs, and find the program you want to make a desktop icon for (for example Microsoft Word).
  • RIGHT mouse click over Microsoft Word and then left click Send to Desktop (Create Shortcut)

Shortcuts of a Folder:

  • Find the folder you want to make a desktop icon for (for example My Pictures).
  • Double click My Documents and notice the My Pictures folder.  RIGHT mouse click over My Pictures folder and then left click Send to Desktop (Create Shortcut)

Shortcuts of a Web Page/Site:

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Go to the site/page you want an icon for on your desktop (for example www.EPSN.com).
  • Click File, Send, Shortcut to Desktop

To Delete or Remove a Shortcut from your Desktop:

  • Right Mouse Click over the shortcut/icon to remove and click Delete.  Then click Yes to confirm the delete.
